The Mammoth Book of New Sherlock Holmes Adventures Editorial Review:

“Unrecorded” cases of the world’s greatest detective are found in this collection of original fiction by Stephen Baxter, Michael Moorcock, H.R.F. Keating, and more. The stories are linked by a running biography of Sherlock Holmes, identifying the “gaps” in the canon.

Customer Reviews:
Ashley scores again with a mammoth book on Sherlock.
This is an excellent collection of stories with only one or two I didn't care for. It was fantastic reading. I especially love a long read when it is on Sherlock Holmes and as good as this one is. I will not go into detail about the stories as some reviewers have. It was interesting that the editor tried to place the stories between the original adventures by Doyle and put in his own backup information. The end of the book lists all the Doyle stories and then novels and short stories by other authors. The latter gives you an opportunity to find some new books not read yet. There were some left out that I felt should have been added, however they are safely on my shelving of books about Holmes. My only complaint is with Amazon. This was supposed to be a new book, however the front cover was bent. I could have complained and gotten a new one, but too late. I wanted to get into it right away.

Entertaining Mixed Bag
This collection houses attempts to present and 'solve' many of the unchronicled cases alluded to by Doyle throughout his Holmesian Canon. The quality of the tales contained herein run from so-so to super; all in all, a pleasant return to the 19th Century haunts and habits of the original Dynamic Duo.

A Huge Treat for Sherlock Holmes Fans
Absolutely first class stories. A collection to delight someone like me, who loves good mysteries set in Victorian England.

Absolute Delight To Read
With the typical Sherlock Holmes short story compilations I have previously read, the theme seems to be writers who have a fair to poor grasp on the original stories, thinly woven mysteries that utterly lack the deductions Holmes was so famous for, and characterization that either completely misses the mark or is not even given much thought to at all.

So I was hopeful when in the Introduction by the famous Sherlockian, Richard Lancelyn Green, it is mentioned that "the character is more important than the case". Essentially, that is what makes a good Holmes pastiche -- you nail the character and even the weaker plots still make for an enjoyable read. I think Green's assessment is the perfect summation of this book. So much emphasis was placed on finding talented writers who were obviously very familiar with Holmes & Watson that I found several stories reminiscent of the original Holmes Canon, especially the first one, "The Bothersome Business of the Dutch Nativity". I was not disappointed from there on out. With the exclusion of 3 or 4 stories, which I couldn't bring myself to finish either because of terrible plot or obvious lack of knowledge about Holmes, the overwhelming majority of stories were some of the most enjoyable I've had the pleasure to read. The bad ones were the exception, unlike most short story pastiches where I was lucky if I found 3 or 4 *readable* ones in the entire compilation! Most were well plotted, a few had flimsier plots but ALL were unrepentant excuses to revisit the world of Sherlock Holmes, and really, that is the main reason most of us seek out pastiches in the first place. Once or twice I found the plot to be dull but the Holmes & Watson interaction was so spot on that those actually became my favorite ones!

This is definitely a must read for both Sherlockians and general mystery fans alike. I doubt I will ever find a better collection of short pastiches...

Some get it right, while others...
Containing 26 Holmes pastiches from a variety of authors dealing with all different time periods in the character's history, this book is an interesting collection of some very good takes on the Holmes legacy along with some misfires. Like any anthology of this size, this one proved to be quite a mixture of clever takes on the legendary detective along with a few tales that will make you wince more than a little. I always find it fun to see how well some writers can capture such a well-established literary figure, getting the tone and setting correct while creating an intriguing mystery; while others just try to shoehorn Holmes into a totally inappropriate circumstance creating the written equivalent of a train wreck. Like any anthology of this magnitude, it all tends to balance with good and bad stories all making for a fun read when you're just looking for something a bit different.
