Customer Reviews:
UGH!!!
This book is HORRIBLE! The whole tone is very patronizing. Some of the stuff is helpful and learning from natural consequences of their actions is important but that's not all there is in parenting. The few good ideas in this book were nothing new; I'd seen them elsewhere. I have read a lot of different parenting books to learn how to better teach my children than I was taught. Since this one underscores empathy so much I thought it would be perfect to try with my family since that is something I really struggle with. I have read through it and discussed it with my husband. We WILL NOT be utilizing this book and it's already on it's way to the thrift store. My biggest turnoff was one of the examples. A mom got rid of the dog because their daughter wasn't taking care of it. (That's not what upset me; it's actually a good idea.) However the child neglected the pet to such an extent that it's ribs were showing and the mother said seeing the pet suffer hurt her (it hurts her eyes to see the starvation & her ears to hear the cries) but the point is the she let the pet get that bad. She's just as responsible about the pets condition as the child. That's extremely neglectful. How is that modeling empathy! It sickens me that the mother "suffered" the neglect yet chose not to act so they could use it as a teaching opportunity. >.<
Finally Help for Teachers and Parents
After having seen Jim Fay present the concept that is set forth in this book, I knew that a revision of his initial book could only be better. Thirty-eight years of teaching and still tutoring gave me the experience to know what a wonderful reference the book can be.
As a professional and a mother, I highly recommend this to anyone who has children or teaches children.
NOT a dangerous book
If you are the parent type with a short fuse and are looking for ways to deal with conflicts with your children that make it easier to stay in control and even add some humor to the "learning experiences" that kids need to have in order to grow up, then this is a good book for you.
You will read some scary-sounding reviews. I am not psychologist, but I am a proud parent of 6 kids and I found this book's ideas, useful, practical, easy to use, effective, and NOT dangerous or cruel.
Yes, if you follow through on some of these recommendations, your kid may have a "bad day" or two. Well so what. If what it takes to get the to learn a valuable life lesson is to walk home, wait an hour for a ride, or lose a cheap toy, it's a good trade. Life is tough and sometimes seems unfair. Children need to learn this and CAN learn it when they are young.
I recommend this book.
Wish I'd read it sooner!
I wish I had this book before my first child was born, who's now 15. My youngest is 6 and her pediatrician reccomended this book to me 4 years ago. I should have taken her advice on it back then. I started implementing some of the Love and Logic strategies as I was reading the book. What a difference jut a few minor adjustments have made. I'm excited to see even more improvements in my parenting skills and in my child's behavior as I get better at practicing Love and Logic. Every parent should read this!
Are you smarter than a 3-year-old?
When my 3 yr old nephew moved in with us, I knew I needed an edge. This book provided it. Some might call this approach "tough love", but I think it is more of just taking a long view. You can learn how to help the children/youth in your life to be more independent and live in harmony in YOUR home.
