Customer Reviews:
surprised at the improvement
I taught myself Callanetics in the 80s from Callan Pinckney's beautiful large book. When the VHS came out I was very happy. As a former dancer, this exercise came naturally and I knew it could be effective in toning and strength- and it was. It required attention to detail in order for it to work properly. At that time all the rage was aerobic dancing and jumping around. This revival and evolution of the original technique can be done by non dancers and all kinds of exercisers. I have seen results similar to the original exercises. The other tape which is Callanetics Evolution is either done as one whole workout or you can pick and choose the sections you want to work on. What I do like is that each section has its own warm up which is very good if you are going to do only a section or two. This tape is cardio and then the new callanetics with some different exercises from Callanetics Evolution. The cardio is very good, not too stressing on your joints. I liked it a lot. I do miss the little counter on the side of the tape, counting off the repetitions. I was able to concentrate on my technique while doing the original VHS and not worrying about the count. The added Cardio section makes the exercise program more rounded. Nice job.
Hard on knees for me
I have been doing Callanetics for quite awhile -(still use the VHS tapes). I had been looking forward to the cardio update even though Callan wasn't leading it. After trying the exercises - I am surprised Callan would approve. She was just so careful on all her exercises about not stressing the back and knees. Just about all the cardio exercises involve lunge type movements that involve the knees to a great degree.
Easy to follow and do
I really like the first half of this DVD. The cardio portion really gives you an excellent 35 minute workout and it's not as easy as it looks. Once you get the steps down, which took me 3 or 4 tries, it flows very well and I can even do some of it on my own without having to refer to the video. I'm much less impressed with the Callanetics portion of the DVD. I used the original Callanetics when it first came out in the 80s and I don't think this series is nearly as effective, especially that portion which works on the upper thighs and buttocks. I go back to the original for those exercises. The background music also makes me a little crazy as well as the soft southern voice of the lead instructor.
Stick to the original....
I got this one and the other one (CallaneticsEvolution) at the library. I found this too different from the original for my taste, but YMMV.
Cardio Workout:
If you want a good cardio workout, there are plenty out there if the object is to get your heartrate up. This one is more of an extended warm-up with some yoga poses. If you like slower, Leslie Sansone-type workouts (i.e. indoor walking workouts), you will probably enjoy this. Would have been nice if there were a "music only" option. Beginner to intermediate level, depending on how much you exaggerate your movements.
Toning Workout:
Shorter than the CallaneticsEvolution workout, and has a few different exercises from that workout. I much prefer the original program because Callan was far more detailed in her instruction, and there was a lot more stretching for flexibility. Also the original exercises were organized in a more logical fashion, IMHO. There is no chaptering for this workout, as there is in CallaneticsEvolution, and as in that DVD, you need a chair or barre or counter only for the leg exercises in the beginning.
This DVD and the other one both have dark outfits which make it difficult to see exactly what muscles you are supposed to be working. There are some yoga-type exercises in both workouts. Some of the exercises are done for so many seconds with the amount of time never specified which is annoying if you are trying to do this without the DVD. I hope there will be a new book out in the future to go with these particular DVDs. The original Callanetics book is excellent.
The camera work is not nearly as good as in the original videos--too many wide shots, too many face shots when the camera should be focused on the particular movement (applies to both DVDs).
Bottom Line:
I found a few exercises I might add to the original workout to add some variety, but this is not as good as the original program IMHO. I also think that both DVDs could and should have been combined into one, because there is a lot of repetition between the two of them. I think the CallaneticsEvolution DVD is the better of the two, because of the chaptering.
Borrow from the library or buy used.
Great Workout!
I really liked this workout - not too intense but really does tone and stretch thorugh classic aerobic moves.
