Diana Krall: Live in Rio [Blu-ray] Editorial Review:
Diana Krall has had a long time fascination with bossa nova, a type of music which perfectly suits her sophisticated yet sensual style. This culminated in her new studio album "Quiet Nights" (released by Verve in spring 2009) and in this stunning concert filmed in the home of the bossa nova, Rio de Janeiro, in November 2008. Accompanied by her band and an orchestra, Diana Krall delivers a superb set of standards in true bossa nova style but clearly bearing her unique stamp. This DVD captures Diana Krall at her scintillating best.
Customer Reviews:
Something That Will Touch Your Heart
This lovely expression of the goodness inherent in music is a wonderful experience and will reaffirm for those who care that here is something to be proud of as we slowly but surely destroy our mother earth. The production is top notch from beginning to end peopled with natural sights that are breathtaking, performers whose talents are obvious, and music, the universal language, which weaves itself into, for all those in attendance and those who are lucky enough to view this offering, our hearts and minds.
There is a selection where Diana invites the audience to join her in song in a dimly lite hall with people sitting at tables lighted magically by candle light(?). They begin faintly at first but join together, delicately, in their beautiful native language with a sensitivity and love that just might bring on an emotional response as you join with them in spirit. (For those of you who might say,"What is this?...Sappy? No way...check it out for yourself.) Diana's side musicians, along with the orchestra, complement her talent with theirs and give us, for a period of time, their artistic gifts for which I believe you will be grateful.... You will be touched.
Short and sweet
This will be a very short and to the point review. Diana Krall: Live In Rio is far and away the best concert video I have ever had the pleasure to view. Sound quality and mix are superb to say the least. Editing and picture quality are imaginative and flawless. What a pleasure to see this quietly stunning talent brought into your home as if you were there to witness this entertaining and timeless concert. Ken K.
With All Due Respect
My favorite Diana Krall song is whichever one I'm listening to at the moment. The Internet radio stations I listen to originate in France; they play Diana two or three times every hour. Also Louis Armstrong; and Miles; Coltrane; Ella; Billie; Nina Simone. All the best. Now and again (every day) they play Otis Redding and Sinatra. It's not an eclectic mix, it's simply the best music the world knows as Jazz.
I won't compare the great Live In Rio DVD with the great Live In Paris DVD and the great Live At The Montreal Jazz Festival DVD. One is better than another? I wish I had a hundred Diana Krall DVDs, each one worse than the next: the worst would be great.
But since Diana always pays deep respect and homage to Nat King Cole (who was my mother's favorite), I'll compare Diana to Nat. They both were blessed with apparently ageless and beautiful skin. Also, Nat had perfect pitch, which Diana doesn't have. What Diana has - and she may be unique for having it - is perfect affect. Paraphrasing Samuel Johnson's praise for poet John Milton's epic genius, I'll say Diana Krall isn't the greatest of story-tellers simply because she isn't the first.
Krall's perfect affect doesn't show only in her singing and playing. There's an absence of ego, or rather, her ego seems to disappear inside the music, deep into its histories. And seldom has a performer of such celebrity and popularity bothered to mention regularly the composers and arrangers of the songs she performs. Her respect and gratitude are bottomless.
I can't believe each of these DVDs of hers can be had for under $100! And you can play them as often as you like!
The perfect music, place and music
A perfect show. Music top quality, most beautiful place in the world and a great jazz show. Worth it.
It's OK
I love the photography and the sound is great, but for some reason I think Diana sounds out of tune in several songs. Don't take my word for it, go to youtube and check that for yourself. Anyway, for the price I paid it was worth it to buy this blue-ray DVD.
